Description

This hands-on course takes a systemic approach to exploring marine ecosystems. Students investigate different parts of ocean ecosystems and how these elements interconnect. Why is it important to understand these interrelationships when assessing and seeking to mitigate human impact? Students explore intervention through rescue & rehabilitation. They also engage in a hands-on comparative anatomy inquiry that includes a dissection to answer: what makes marine life suited for water?

•How do scientists explore the oceans? What techniques and tools do we have to generate information about the marine life and systems?
•How do scientists detect the signs and signals of human impact and intervention (e.g., toxicology, pollution, etc.)?

As scientists and those passionate about our oceans, what questions do we need to ask and answer to help enable marine systems to survive and thrive?--all questions explored in this course.

This is a terrific course for students passionate about marine life and who seek to understand how to think about sustainability issues in a nuanced way.
